چکیده

A necessary and sufficient scalar condition for a Mueller matrix M to describe a non-depolarizing optical system is obtained. By computing only one scalar parameter, it can be determined whether a given Mueller matrix M describes a non-depolarizing, or a depolarizing optical system. The following theorem is stated: a necessary and sufficient condition for a given Mueller matrix M to describe a non-depolarizing optical system is Tr (MTM) = 4m2o.

Q(M) and the depolarization index scalar metrics.

A depolarization scalar metric for Mueller matrices, named Q(M), is derived from the degree of polarization. Q(M) has been recently reported, and it has been deduced from the nine bilinear constraints between the sixteen elements of the Mueller-Jones matrix. We discuss the relations between Q(M) and the depolarization index.

An eigenvalue criterion for matrices transforming Stokes parameters

Simple eigenvalue tests are given to ascertain that a given real 4X 4 matrix transforms the four-vector of Stokes parameters of a beam of light into the four-vector of Stokes parameters of another beam of light, and to determine whether a given 4X4 matrix is a weighted sum of pure Mueller matrices. The latter result is derived for matrices satisfying a certain symmetry condition. To derive thes...

Sum decomposition of Mueller-matrix images and spectra of beetle cuticles.

Spectral Mueller matrices measured at multiple angles of incidence as well as Mueller matrix images are recorded on the exoskeletons (cuticles) of the scarab beetles Cetonia aurata and Chrysina argenteola. Cetonia aurata is green whereas Chrysina argenteola is gold-colored. When illuminated with natural (unpolarized) light, both species reflect left-handed and near-circularly polarized light or...

Mueller matrix differential decomposition.

We present a Mueller matrix decomposition based on the differential formulation of the Mueller calculus. The differential Mueller matrix is obtained from the macroscopic matrix through an eigenanalysis. It is subsequently resolved into the complete set of 16 differential matrices that correspond to the basic types of optical behavior for depolarizing anisotropic media. The method is successfull...

General description of polarization in lidar using Stokes vectors and polar decomposition of Mueller matrices.

Polarization measurements have become nearly indispensible in lidar cloud and aerosol studies. Despite polarization's widespread use in lidar, its theoretical description has been widely varying in accuracy and completeness. Incomplete polarization lidar descriptions invariably result in poor accountability for scatterer properties and instrument effects, reducing data accuracy and disallowing ...
